Hennepin County offers technical assistance and grants up to $50,000 to businesses that need help setting up or improving their recycling programs. Grants can be used for the purchase of containers, equipment purchase and installation, hauling service charges and minor improvements to loading docks and waste enclosures.

Businesses that generate small amounts of solid waste can receive recycling, organics and garbage service (not yard waste) through the city’s residential curbside collection program, as long the following conditions are met:

• Service location is along existing residential curbside collection routes.
• Carts are able to be placed at the curb (or alley for alley routes) on collection day. Collection trucks cannot enter private parking lots or driveways to provide service.
• Amount of waste generated can be collected in city-owned carts, not dumpsters. No material may be placed outside the cart.
• Business is currently billed for other city utilities (water and sewer).

The same rules and collection schedules apply to small businesses as to single-family residential. Recycling is collected every other week (2024 recycling calendar); organics and garbage are collected weekly.

Participation in the program by any business can be terminated at any time by the city.

Available service levels

Eligible businesses may sign up for the following service levels; rates are monthly, and apply to 2024. Garbage rates include applicable taxes and fees; recycling and organics are not taxed. *Please note: Stand alone garbage service is not provided. Business must also have recycling service in order to receive garbage service.
