Cedar Lake Trail opens in parts of St. Louis Park
In August 2022, the Metropolitan Council opened a segment of the Cedar Lake Regional Trail in St. Louis Park from the east side of Wooddale Avenue to the west side of Beltline Boulevard. This excludes the underpass at Wooddale Avenue and the bridge at Beltline Boulevard. A section of regional trail in Hopkins between 11th Avenue and the Hopkins Depot has also opened. No other segments are expected to open in 2022.
The majority of the Cedar Lake Trail through St. Louis Park and Hopkins remains closed for construction of METRO Green Line Extension, from just east of the North Cedar Lake Trail connection in Hopkins to France Avenue in St. Louis Park.
The existing detour route along Minnetonka Boulevard is still the official detour route. Detour signs notify trail users of alternative routes. The city has provided a detour map, and a system-wide detour map is available from the Metropolitan Council.
Project background
On Sept. 14, 2020, the METRO Green Line Extension project received its Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The FFGA provides nearly a billion dollars in federal funds as a match to more than a billion dollars of local funding and cleared the way for the completion of the project. Construction began in winter 2018.
The METRO Green Line Extension will operate on a route from downtown Minneapolis through St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie, passing in close proximity to Edina. The line will include 16 new stations, including three in St. Louis Park. It will be part of an integrated system of transitways, including connections to the METRO Blue Line, the Northstar Commuter Rail line, many bus routes and proposed future transitways.
The roughly $2 billion project is the largest infrastructure project in the state’s history and is funded by the Metropolitan Council and project partners through a mix of federal, state and local sources.
