City council held a second reading of Ordinance No. 2625-21 related to building readiness. The ordinance went into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.
Background
The city council has approved the following proposed ordinances for building readiness in new commercial and multifamily buildings in the City of St. Louis Park:
- Broadband readiness – This proposed ordinance would set minimum performance requirements for broadband speeds and facilities for new and significantly expanded buildings.
- Parking ramp and garage safety – The proposed ordinance is designed to provide an additional measure of safety in most new enclosed or multilevel parking garages. This involves establishing minimum lighting levels, required surveillance cameras, video recording, signage and emergency call stations. It also includes law enforcement access to video recordings when warranted by an incident or investigation.
- Public safety radio coverage – The goal of this ordinance is to provide adequate public safety radio coverage in buildings that present a challenge due to structural features such as building material, basements or other obstacles.
These are based on opportunities to make St. Louis Park safer and technology ready for the future. Over the last few years, several developers have been able to meet these requirements and so it is proposed they be put in ordinance form.
