St. Louis Park has seasonal road weight restrictions in late winter and early spring to help protect the integrity of the streets. The city follows the Minnesota Department of Transportation seasonal load limits schedule for imposing and removing spring road weight limit restrictions. In a typical year, spring road restrictions go into effect in March and end about eight weeks later, depending on weather conditions.

St. Louis Park's road weight limits are 6 tons (12,000 pounds) per axle on residential streets and 9 tons (18,000 pounds) on municipal state aid streets, unless otherwise posted. View the seasonal load limits map to find the weight limits for city streets.

Seasonal weight restrictions waivers

There are limited instances, such as moving trucks or emergency issues, when a weight waiver will be given. All other waiver requests will first be examined for alternative options, such as to divide the load in two or bring less amounts in each trip. The public works director has the discretion to approve weight restriction waivers to carry loads up to the spring capacity rating on the designated haul route. For construction projects, a five-day advance notice is required to process the request. Typically, the city does not approve open-ended permits.

If a waiver is issued, there is a $50 fee and the permit is good for one trip only.

To apply for the waiver, contact the public works at 952.924.2562. Please allow for 24 hours to process non-commercial waivers.

Approved waivers must be paid for and picked up at the Municipal Service Center between 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. No online or phone transactions are accepted.
