The Recycling Champions program was launched in 2017 to engage residents who are interested in learning more about recycling. Through the program, residents serve as ambassadors in the community and share what they learn with family, friends and neighbors.
Recycling Champions training
The next Recycling Champions training will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the Municipal Service Center (7305 Oxford St.) from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. To participate, RSVP by Jan. 30 to recycling@stlouisparkmn.gov or call 952.924.2187. Include your name, email, phone number and neighborhood in your email or voice message.
Why are Recycling Champions important?
Recycling participation in our city is high – over 90% – but we still see contamination. Additionally, waste sorts done by the county and state indicate many items that are recyclable are still being thrown out. Multifamily buildings have their own unique set of considerations that may include inconsistent signage and inadequate capacity. Recycling Champions provide recycling education throughout the city and in turn improve recycling in the city. They are also often better able to communicate more complicated topics than the city could through a brochure.
What is the commitment of a Recycling Champion?
While there is no formal volunteer or time requirement, residents who attend training as Recycling Champions are asked to find ways to share the knowledge they gain with others in the community. This might include helping a neighbor understand what can and can’t go in their recycling or volunteering at an event to help attendees properly sort recyclables. Some Recycling Champions have used their knowledge to give mini-presentations at block parties or share useful tips during National Night Out.
Recycling Champions are asked to report back on their volunteer activities. This helps the city track the impact of the program.
Submit a recycling champion activity report.
How do I become a Recycling Champion?
Any resident can become a Recycling Champion. We are looking for enthusiastic people who enjoy peer-to-peer educating, learning new things and advocating for recycling.
